Thibaut Courtois stakes claim for Petr Cech’s Chelsea place with stunning point-blank save against Werder Bremen
Belgian youngster Courtois has returned to Stamford Bridge after three seasons on loan with Atletico Madrid and despite being in possession of the Blues’ no.1 shirt for a decade, Cech could be forced out by the highly-rated stopper.
Reports have suggested Chelsea could be willing to sell Cech this summer, but if he remains at the club, Mourinho is likely to have a real dilemma on his hands – particularly if Courtois keeps pulling off incredible saves like this (skip to 50 seconds on the video).
The 22-year-old started yesterday’s 3-0 pre-season defeat to Werder Bremen – his first match in a Chelsea shirt.
And despite conceding two goals in the first-half before being replaced by Cech, Courtois gave Blues fans a reason to be positive by pulling off a superb save to deny ex-Chelsea man Franco Di Santo from point-blank range.

Manchester United Signs Marcos Rojo
Southampton have targeted Rojo for much of the summer and have been working hard to broker a deal with Sporting Lisbon while also attempting to persuade the player to move to St Mary's Stadium.
The south coast club were prepared to offer €25 million for the Argentina international but Sporting stood firm on his €38m release clause.
United have now entered the fray and made an offer of around €25m and, while it is still some way short of what the Portuguese giants want, Rojo has learned of the Old Trafford club's interest and is very much keen on the move.
Rojo, who can play centrally or on the left, impressed during the World Cup and was a regular feature for Argentina in their run to the final, where they lost to Germany.
A source confirmed to Goal: "Rojo knows United have now come in and things have changed - he wants to move to Manchester."
United have brought in Ander Herrera and full-back Luke Shaw this summer as Louis van Gaal prepares for his first season in the Premier League. Van Gaal has told club officials that he is happy with his squad but the Red Devils could yet make further signings before the transfer window closes
Mesut Ozil Pledges To Improve After One Year Of Criticism From Fans
Now Ozil, fresh from his World Cup success with Germany, insists he’s working on improvement after some fair criticism of his game last term.
‘There is room for improvement in all departments,’ the 25-year-old told German publication Sport Bild.
‘I need to have more shots at goal again, and also improve my headers. The World Cup title was a great success, but it has to go on now.
‘I am looking forward to my second season in England, because I can also bring in my experience from my first season.
‘I feel great in England, and even more so in London and especially at Arsenal. When things don’t run that smooth at times, there is criticism.
‘Sometimes it’s fair, and sometimes it’s unfair. But I can judge my performances very well — and I also know how the coach [Arsene Wenger] and the fans rate it.
‘There at least five teams competing for the title in the Premier League. But to me personally it’s clear: I want to have maximum success in every competition I play.
‘I’ve only been back with the team since Monday. But I believe that we have made good reinforcements. And I hope that those injury woes from last season do not continue.’
Arsenal Bid £51m For Cavani
Arsenal are leading the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson
Cavani for £51 million. The former Napoli frontman has also been
tracked by Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea but could be heading
to north London.
Cavani has been strongly linked with a move to the Gunners in the last few days, with his agent ramping up the talk by admitting he has previously been approached by Arsene Wenger.
The Uruguayan striker has since played down transfer talk, insisting he expects to stay put, but respected Spanish journalist Kike Marin says Arsenal are still hoping to do business.
He says that Wenger remains a huge fan of Cavani and would love to bring him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
The transfer would hinge on whether PSG can complete the protracted signing of Angel Di Maria, with the French club happy to offload Cavani if a deal for Di Maria can be agreed.
Cavani is rated at about £51million and has been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea this summer.

Official: Mancity's Javi Garcia Moves To Zenit
Javi García leaves Manchester City for Zenit St Petersburg in
a deal worth nearly £13m to end his two seasons at the champions, with
the Russian club hopeful of announcing his signature at a press
conference on Thursday.
The Spaniard’s transfer is for a fee of £13m plus a further £800,000 in add-ons, with García having fallen even further behind in the thinking of Manuel Pellegrini after the purchase of Fernando from Porto to strengthen his central midfield options.
With Yaya Touré and Fernandinho the established starters in the position and Eliaquim Mangala’s £32m arrival this week as a centre-back - where Garcia has been used in an emergency - the prospects of him enjoying regular first-team action had been greatly reduced.

Shaw impressed With the Thoroughness Of Vaan Gal.Manutd
The full-back was bought by the Red Devils for €37.5 million over the summer, but has been criticised by manager Louis van Gaal for poor fitness levels following the World Cup.
The 19-year-old has since missed out on a place in the starting XI, with a resurgent Ashley Young preferred at left wing-back, and faces a battle to be selected for United's Premier League opener against Swansea City on August 16.
The former Southampton starlet should be given a chance to impress at some stage against Valencia on Tuesday, though, and is relishing playing at the Theatre of Dreams following a manic tour of the USA.
"It’s been a crazy few weeks," Shaw told reporters. "I got back from the World Cup and came up here to get everything sorted with the medical.
"I’d heard a lot of things about how crazy it was on tour and I witnessed that.
"Until you have gone out to America [with United], you don’t know what it’s like. That surprised me, but I have heard it’s even worse in Asia. It was really nice to see how many supporters United have got out there.
"As a kid, it’s a dream to play at Old Trafford and it’s one of the biggest arenas in the world.
"To know it’s going to be my home ground is something special. I can’t wait to get my first touch on the pitch, just to relish it."
The match against the Liga outfit represents Van Gaal's final opportunity to see his side on the pitch ahead of the new campaign, and as thus reportedly sent a scout to watch Nuno's team during their Emirates Cup campaign.
And Shaw admits that he has been impressed with the thoroughness of his manager as they look to build on their International Champions Cup win and chase further honours.
"Every game is serious. We want to improve as a team and the way we can do that is going into the game properly by using the scouts to discover what they are like and see how we are going to play against them.
"The main thing is obviously the first Premier League game against Swansea, the first match of the season, but we want to keep improving as a team and getting used to the formation so we will be flying when the season starts.
"You have got to be positive and, for me personally, I have come here to win trophies.
"That is something everyone wants, not just me. Everyone in that dressing room is looking to do that.
"We all can’t wait to get started."

Liverpool Tell Toure He Can Leave
Trabzonspor are close to completing a deal for Kolo Toure after the Ivory Coast international was told he is surplus to requirements at Liverpool this season.
The 33-year-old joined the Anfield club on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer but the signing of Dejan Lovren and Brendan Rodgers’ determination to keep hold of Daniel Agger - despite reports linking the Dane with a move - have pushed Toure further down the pecking order.
Trabzonspor are leading the race to sign the veteran centre-half and Goal understands the Turkish club are confident of concluding a deal for the former Arsenal star.
Toure made 24 appearances for Liverpool last season but featured just once during the run-in between the end of February and May as the Merseysiders narrowly missed out on their first league title in 24 years.
Liverpool look set to start the season with Lovren and Martin Skrtel at the heart of their defence but Rodgers appears keen to retain the services of Agger and insists he is yet to receive an offer for the 29-year-old.
Rodgers said: "I've seen some stories on that but, no, we haven't had any enquiries.
"Dan's still getting some work done on his knee, he's been a bit unfortunate since America. He's still getting treatment but we haven't had anything, no offers."
Manchester City's Jason Denayer loaned To Celtic .
"Celtic have today completed the signing of highly-rated Belgian defender Jason Denayer on a year-long loan from Manchester City," read a statement on Celtic's official website.
"Jason is an exciting and talented young player, who was part of the Manchester City squad during their pre-season preparations."
It marks the second signing in as many days for Celtic, after Bulgaria international Aleksandar Tonev joined on a season-long loan from Aston Villa.
The Belgian could go straight into Celtic's squad for the Champions League play-off first-leg tie with Maribor, although their participation depends on Legia Warsaw's appeal against being expelled from the competition for featuring an ineligible player.
Szczesny: This is the best Arsenal side I've Played In
Arsene Wenger's charges picked up their second piece of silverware in three months on Sunday, adding to their FA Cup success last season with a 3-0 win over reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield.
And the 24-year-old Szczesny feels Arsenal are capable of lifting their first title since 2004 next May.
"Looking at it on paper I think it is the strongest side we have had," the goalkeeper told reporters. "Except for obviously Thomas [Vermaelen, who has moved to Barcelona] we have not lost any key players.
"Even if someone did leave on a free contract [Bacary Sagna], we managed to replace them with good players.
"So we are looking stronger and stronger and we are very happy with that."
New arrivals Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy were both impressive in Arsenal's victory over City, and Szczesny praised both players after they made their competitive debuts for the club.
"Calum is really solid, he is only 19 as well," the Poland international pointed out. "For him to make his debut for Arsenal at Wembley and do so well, that was very good to see.
"And Mathieu has a lot of experience so we hope to see him perform at that level all the time."

Manchester City Playmaker David Silva signs A fresh Five-Year Contract
Manchester City playmaker David Silva has signed a fresh five-year contract with the Premier League champions.
The Spain international has committed himself to the club until the age of 33, having already spent four successful seasons at the Etihad following his move from Valencia after the 2010 World Cup.
Silva told City's official website: "From the moment I joined the club four years ago it has felt like a second home to me.
"On and off the pitch, I feel incredibly content and fulfilled professionally and personally, so why wouldn’t I want to stay and keep winning trophies with this fantastic team?
"Over the last four years, we have achieved so much together, establishing City as a dominating force in England and now, when I look around this dressing room, I can see no reason why we won’t become one of the top teams in the world.
"It was a straightforward decision to extend my stay here and spend my peak years at Manchester City, a club with unbelievable fans who have always supported me."

The 23-year-old defender has starred for both his club and his country in recent times, and now, according to Italy's Tutto Mercato, Arsenal's French chief will make his move.
Manolas has been linked with a move to Italy - with Roma, Juventus and Napoli all mooted as potential destinations - but now the Premier League could be calling his name at the highest pitch to ignore..

The legendary striker was forced out in the fisrt half of the blues game against Hungarian side Ferencvaros and now it emerges that the 36 year old ankle injury could drive him off half the contract he just signed. Arsenal To Sign Daniel Agger In Two Days
Agger looks set to leave Anfield
this summer after becoming frustrated with his fall down the pecking
order under Rodgers, with Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and new signing
Dejan Lovren all preferred to the Denmark captain.
With Arsenal looking to replace Thomas Vermaelen after the former club captain completed a £15m move to Barcelona, the Gunners were monitoring Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, although any move away from the Bundesliga club looks to be off after he was appointed captain for the upcoming season.
This has made Arsenal to push harder for Daniel and its believed the deal will be sealed in two days

What he had to say
'I want to look forward not back and the desire is there to play a lot of games, I believe I can. Last year was disappointing with injuries but that happens sometimes in a long career. I hope that I will be stronger this season and play more games. I am ready and I feel I can offer the club a lot. I can’t wait to get started with training. This is a new beginning.'
unfortunately he has been sidelined for injury.
Official: Manchester City sign Mangala from Porto
The France centre-back was in Manchester in July to complete a medical after the two clubs agreed a £31.8 million deal.
City had tried to sign Mangala during the January transfer window but the Portuguese club held firm, despite the investment trust which owns part of his economic rights willing to do a deal.
The Premier League champions also unsuccessfully attempted to sign Mangala's team-mate, Brazilian midfielder Fernando, in the winter window, but announced his signing during the World Cup.
“City is a top club in Europe," Mangala told the club's official website. "For me, it was an important step to leave Porto and join Manchester City in order to continue my progress. I want to win titles and I believe I can do this. I am ambitious and this is why I am here.
“I’m very happy to come to England because for me, the Premier League is the best league in the world. It is a very intense and very aggressive competition. There are plenty of goals, so it is also really nice to watch and I can’t wait to get started!
“The fact that Fernando is here is better because I played with him at Porto but there is also other players that I know like Sagna, Clichy and Nasri."
City had prioritised the capture of an elite central defender to partner Vincent Kompany, and the 23-year-old Frenchman becomes the club's sixth summer signing after Bacary Sagna, Fernando, Willy Caballero, Frank Lampard and Bruno Zuculini.

Wenger's Statement After Arsenal 3-0 Win over Man City
on the performance…
I felt we had a complete performance in the first half as long as we had the legs to sustain what we wanted to do. In the second half our togetherness and the third goal got us through. We defended well, we lost a bit more of the ball than in the first half and our movements were less fluent but we kept the spirit and organisation. The first half was very exciting.
on looking forward to the Premier League season…
To win today gives us a positive platform to prepare but now the Premier League starts and we have to start well at home because it's a derby, it's a very uncomfortable team [we face in Crystal Palace]. It will be a different kind of game as well. Let's be on our toes and prepare well but it was important to win today.
on judging the importance of games like the Community Shield...
You want to win the game and you want to look at the quality of the performance as well. I think it was important for our confidence to win the game but it was as well even more important to have a big part in the game with a quality performance. That is the comfort for me to see that we can produce the kind of quality we can produce for some long patches in the game.
on beating a top-four side…
That's why it was important for us today not to lose the game. On that front we know that last year we were very consistent against the teams outside the top six and not consistent against the top six teams. The year before it was reversed so let's hope that this year it will be right on both sides.
on Calum Chambers playing centre back...
I saw him there when I bought him and I play him there. For a 19-year-old he had an outstanding performance today. The kind of performance he delivered today is very promising. It's impressive because he hasn't got a long history in this position because he was a right back and I think if all goes well he has a good career in front of him.
on Chambers challenging Mertesacker…
He can challenge both centre backs and that's what you want. You cannot play with two centre backs the whole season; that means he will play. You saw Monreal who played one or two games at centre back and he did well.
on Chambers' arrival and Vermaelen's departure being linked…
I allowed Thomas Vermaelen to leave before the end of the season because he was not playing regularly, he behaved outstandingly the whole season with dignity. It's difficult to maintain that kind of player at the top level if he doesn't play regularly. I'm quite grateful and wish him very well because his behaviour was outstanding even if he didn't play.
on Chambers…
I would have bought him anyway because he can play right back, centre back and he can play central midfield.
on replacing Vermaelen…
What it does in my head is [make me think that] Chambers is among the best three and if I can find another one I will do it. But to find another one of that quality will not be easy because... Vermaelen left us and had the choice between two massive clubs. That means these clubs have looked everywhere as well and that means it's not easy to find.
on looking for a fourth-choice centre back…
You make your position with your performance and you have to accept that. With the boys who have chosen to live in a competitive world, who plays? I cannot tell you. But maybe a guy who can play in two or three different positions would be a better asset for us.
on Debuchy and Alexis' performance…
Debuchy was excellent, [Alexis] Sanchez was lively, still not completely ready physically but he was very exciting. He was always dangerous, always a threat and gives us great qualities on the counter-attack.
on where Alexis will play…
He can play on both flanks.
on who the new captain will be…
1. Arteta, 2. Mertesacker.
on Wilshere…
Jack is OK.
on Gibbs…
He is OK. He had a good performance today, I wouldn't like to forget him because he was outstanding for me today.
on his attacking options this season…
I have more attacking options than I had for a long time - that's for sure. Three, four, five years ago, every year we lost a big player. In the last two years, we added players like Ozil and this season like Alexis so of course that strengthens the squad. I am of course very ambitious but I'm a bit cautious because I have quite a good experience. I look around and see the other teams have strengthened as well so it will be interesting to watch the Premier League because it looks like all the big teams will be very strong.
on the last time he had this competition for places…
I don't know. I don't look to much behind me, I always look forward.
on winning two trophies in 85 days…
I would love to win one every week, unfortunately it's not possible. Let's just win the next game.
