Arsène Wenger's Post-Match Press Conference After Arsenal's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace:

It was not the plan, the plan was to win the game, but because of the physicality and organisation level of Crystal Palace, it was very difficult for us. Why? Because we conceded a goal on the first corner they had. We lacked a bit of pace in the final third to change what we built up into dangerous situations.
But it was enough to win the game and win the three points. You could see that for the first game of the season, nobody won at home, we were the only team that won at home. So that shows you that it's difficult for everybody on the first day of the season. We got the three points we wanted, now let's focus on Besiktas.
on time wasting tactics…

I am [going to have to get used to it] because it started very early in the game. I must congratulate Speroni because he does just enough to gain time without doing too much to get a yellow card! So that's an art.
You could see that for the first game of the season, nobody won at home, we were the only team that won at home. So that shows you that it's difficult for everybody on the first day of the season
on Arsenal's attitude in tight games…

Yes of course we will need that. I believe that our attitude was right, on our fluency we can do better, but that will come. Let's get everybody physically ready. Having said that, you could see that Crystal Palace played with the same organisation as last year, when they changed the situation from a relegation team to finishing 11th in the Premier League. They were physically very strong and they added some height with Hangeland and he scored a goal.
on the patience of the supporters…

I am grateful for that because before, sometimes we had to face that frustration. Today, at 1-0 down they stayed behind the team. At 1-1 when we started to have heavy legs, they gave us some energy.
on Jack Wilshere being replaced…

He was sick in the last few days and I felt that he started to miss some competitiveness. I had options on the bench as well. [Criticism of him is not fair] but let's give him games, he has to build up slowly. For me the most important thing for him is not to have any problem with his ankle. It looks like he's on the right way on that front. As for the rest, he looks sharper every week.
on Aaron Ramsey's freshness…

That shows you that there is no coincidence in scoring goals. He turned up where you need to be in the box. He scored last Sunday, he scored again today and at a very important moment of the game.
on Calum Chambers…

I must say, honestly, we bought him as a right back, but in my opinion he could play centre back. I tried it in pre-season and from game to game he becomes stronger. Today he had a remarkable performance.
on his tactical decisions…

Look, on some decisions I did not have much choice. For any coach in the world when a player is injured it is easy to make a decision, you just bring a player on. For the rest, I thought that Yaya Sanogo was a bit jaded in the second half.
on Alexis Sanchez…

I am very happy with his attitude because he kept on fighting for 90 minutes, even if he is not completely ready physically. Tactically he needs to improve his understanding with his partners but he looked lively and dangerous until the end. I'm happy with his overall attitude and performance.
on Laurent Koscielny…

He can respond [to setbacks like the first goal]. We had concerns about playing him today because he didn't practice for two or three days, but he has outstanding physical qualities and pace. He's another one who is at the right place in the box. He is not the tallest but if you look he is always on the first or the second ball in the box as a defender, and that's a great quality.

Raheem Sterling's Salary Could Quadruple In New Liverpool Contract

Raheem Sterling will be offered a stunning new contract by Liverpool.
The Anfield club are keen to thrash out a mega-deal to tie down the teenager for the long term because of his growing reputation.
Real Madrid are already on red alert after Sterling’s impressive form and performances for Liverpool during their run-in last season.
The 19-year-old also enhanced his reputation at the World Cup despite England’s disappointing campaign.
Sterling signed a £30,000-a-week deal just over 18 months ago and that expires in 2017 but the club want to reward him - and he can even expect to quadruple his wage.
We revealed in April that Liverpool want to lock him down after his impressive form which pushed him into England’s World Cup squad and nearly helped Liverpool win the title.
The Reds have also been impressed with Sterling’s growing maturity off the pitch and they are anxious to keep their brightest young star.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has also talked up Sterling this week, claiming the teenager has taken his game to a “new level.”
Rodgers said: “This kid is only going to get better. He’s way above the level from when he first came in. Tactically, technically, and what has been beautiful to watch with Raheem has been his maturity.
“He’s turning into a beautiful young man, with all the responsibility. He’s still only 19, but in big games he’s performed and he’s a wonderful talent.”
The Liverpool manager also compared a goal Sterling scored in a pre-season game against Manchester City to the brilliance shown by Lionel Messi.
That is a clear indication of just how highly Liverpool rate Sterling and they have moved to begin negotiations for the versatile forward.
They know that they will need to tie him down to put off the growing list of admirers headed by European champions Real.

Arsenal Reject Liverpool Campbell Bid

The Merseysiders are among a cluster of clubs who have enquired about taking the Costa Rica international on a season-long loan as they attempt to bolster their strike force.

However, Arsene Wenger has rebuffed all offers and wants to hold on to the 22-year-old at least until January.

Campbell will be integrated into the Arsenal senior squad for the first time since joining the club in 2011, following loan spells at Lorient, Real Betis and Olympiakos. He will join Olivier Giroud, Yaya Sanogo and new signing Alexis Sanchez in battling for the central striker's role.

Speaking at his Friday press briefing ahead of Saturday's Premier League curtain-raiser against Crystal Palace, Wenger said Campbell had "matured a lot" and figured in his plans for the forthcoming campaign.    He has come from a non-competitive world to a world with hyper-competition," he said. "He has adapted slowly, but has adapted very well, he has a very good spirit and attitude.

"He is a member of my squad at the moment, he had a good preparation and played well against Benfica.

"In training he is very focused and eager to do well. I would like to keep him."

The Arsenal boss is expected to review the situation in the winter window depending upon the success of Campbell and his fellow front men during the opening months of the season.

Liverpool are working on signing a striker to provide competition for Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert. They have held two rounds of talks with Samuel Eto'o this week after pulling the plug on a €10 million move for Loic Remy.

Official: Alberto Moreno Sings For Liverpool

The Reds reached an agreement  with the Spanish club earlier this week, subject to the 22-year-old passing a medical.
Moreno said: "Liverpool are the best club in England and I couldn't waste an opportunity to come and play for them."
The defender, who becomes Liverpool's eighth signing this summer, was not registered in time to play in Sunday's Premier League match with Southampton.

Alberto Moreno matches in 2013-14 season

Competition Appearances Goals

Europa League (including qualifiers) 14 0
Copa del Rey 1 0
Moreno said he spoke to fellow Spaniards and former Liverpool players Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa before making his decision.
He said: "They all told me I can grow a lot here as a footballer as this is a massive club. I hope to give my best and do all I can to help."
Moreno came through the ranks at Sevilla, playing 44 games last season as the club won the Europa League.

Van Gaal suffers Defeat In His First Competitive Game As Manchester United Manager

The Louis van Gaal era, promising much for Manchester United, begins with a damp squib rather than a bang. A home match against Swansea City is a fairly gentle way to start the season, but an injury-plagued United squad made an extraordinary meal of the contest, conceding in both halves and eventually going down to a 2-1 defeat.
The opening 20 minutes of the Premier League season was appropriately frenetic. Both sides were open in midfield -- Manchester United by design and Swansea through the skill of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera -- but clear-cut chances were hard to come by. There was a pre-season look to the final ball from both sides, however, and what might have been incisive passes ended up running through to the goalkeepers or being cut out by the defence.
Unfortunately for United, the first key moment of the match was an injury. Jesse Lingard went in for a 50-50 ball with Ashley Williams and came off by far the worst, requiring lengthy treatment for an ankle injury as a result. The 21-year-old struggled on for a few minutes more before being replaced by Adnan Januzaj, who slotted in not-entirely-successfully at right wingback.
Insult was added to injury shortly thereafter. The other side of the hosts' defence constituted Ashley Young, normally an attacking player, and Tyler Blackett, making his first senior start for the club. And naturally Swansea looked to exploit that weakness at every opportunity, finally making it count just before the hour mark. A Nathan Dyer knockdown took both Young and Blackett out of the equation, leaving Gylfi Sigurdsson free to pick out Ki Sung-Yeung at the top of the box. The Korean made no mistake, planting an expert finish just inside David de Gea's right-hand post.
Van Gaal's response was to throw Nani on at halftime, changing from the ineffective back three to a more standard but still deeply odd 4-2-3-1. The switch -- which mostly served to free up Januzaj to join the attack -- paid dividends in short order. Januzaj shredded the unfortunate Neil Taylor to win the 52nd-minute corner from which the equaliser arrived. Mata's delivery bounced off Bony's back, and Wayne Rooney was fastest to react, acrobatically hammering past Lukasz Fabianski from close range to restore parity.
Rooney came within inches of a brace ten minutes later with a well-taken free kick that struck the angle of post and bar, but if the pressure was on the visitors they didn't show it, taking back their lead with 20 minutes to go. Bony's quick free kick led to substitute Jefferson Montero breaking down the left flank, Young got sucked under the cross, and as the ball pinballed around the box Sigurdsson managed to send a shot squirming under de Gea to make it 2-1.
United were desperate for a second, but a slew of set pieces came to nothing and the better chances in the closing stages actually fell to the visitors, who would have scored their third through Bafetimbi Gomis if not for an extraordinary intervention from Phil Jones coming across from right back. The hosts were by now reduced to floating long passes in the vague direction of Marouane Fellaini, which was surprisingly ineffective against a robust Swansea defence.
And so it ended 2-1. For Garry Monk and a rebuilding Swansea City, this is a huge (and deserved) win. For United, however, it's clear that the problems from last year ran deeper than David Moyes.
Manchester United starting lineup (3-4-1-2): David de Gea; Tyler Blackett, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones; Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher, Ander Herrera (Marouane Fellaini 67'), Jesse Lingard (Adnan Januzaj 24'); Juan Mata; Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez (Nani 45').
Goals: Rooney 53'.
Swansea City starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Lukasz Fabianski; Neil Taylor (Dwight Tiendali 53'), Ashley Williams, Jordi Amat, Angel Rangel; Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung-Yeung; Wayne Routledge, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Nathan Dyer (Jefferson Montero 67'); Wilfried Bony (Bafetimbi Gomis 77').
Goals: Ki 28', Sigurdsson 72'.
